Case Study
Land Rover Discovery Parking Brake Warning Light
Our customer brought in their Land Rover Discovery with the parking brake warning light on and an error message on the dashboard. Because the electronic parking brake works alongside the ABS system, our technicians carried out a thorough diagnostic investigation to make sure there were no potentially hazardous underlying problems with the braking system.

Fault Codes
U2002-13 – Switch general electric failure – circuit open
Common Symptoms
- Parking brake warning light on
- Parking brake error message on the dashboard
- Electronic parking brake switch not responding
Land Rover Discovery Diagnostics
A fault code scan returned U2002-13, Switch general electric failure, circuit open. The serial data showed an error in the electric parking brake switch input, with no change in the readings when the switch was pressed or released. The switch itself operated smoothly, and there were no relevant technical bulletins. Using our scan tool, we were able to operate the parking brake and lock and unlock the rear wheels, but a handbrake calibration was unsuccessful. The rear parking brake motors showed no damage and the wiring at the ABS module looked fine, narrowing the cause down to the switch, the wiring or the ABS module. We removed the centre console to test the switch wiring and found a good ground, with power on three of the four wires but none on the fourth. Removing the airbox to reach the ABS module, we carried out resistance checks back to the switch and found one power supply wire giving an abnormal reading. After opening up the passenger footwell to reach the multi-plug connector, we confirmed the plug to switch side was fine, but there was high resistance between the ABS module and the multi-plug.

Corroded Wire Replacement
While monitoring the resistance, we gently moved the wiring loom near the ABS module and saw the reading fluctuate. Opening up the loom revealed a corroded wire supplying power to the parking brake switch. We cut out the corroded section, replaced it with a new length of wire and soldered it securely in place. It's worth knowing that the Range Rover Sport of the same era is mechanically very similar to the Discovery, so a parking brake warning on one of these could also be caused by a corroded wire, although we'd always recommend a diagnostic check to be sure.
Resolution
With the new section of wire fitted, the parking brake switch worked correctly again. We reassembled the vehicle, cleared all fault codes and confirmed there were no remaining parking brake warnings on the dashboard, leaving our customer's Discovery safe and back on the road.

I have used Cedar Garages on 4 occasions and every time they have dealt with my requirements quickly and efficiently and at a fair price. The engine diagnostics on the last occasion was random and took two visits to resolve with a larger bill than I would have liked but all the way through they were informative with regular updates and communication. Will use them again and recommend them.
