Fault Finding Tooling & Capabilities
Modern cars rely on dozens of control units, sensors and wiring, so finding the real cause of a fault takes more than a quick code read. At Cedar Garage we've invested in dealer-level diagnostic equipment and specialist test kit, so our technicians can track down faults accurately on all makes and models, for drivers across Worthing, Sompting and West Sussex.
Dealer-Level Equipment
The Right Kit to Find the Real Fault
A fault code tells us which system has spotted a problem, not always what has caused it. Our technicians combine dealer-level scan tools with oscilloscope, wiring and smoke testing to confirm exactly where a fault lies before anything is replaced. That means less guesswork, no paying for parts you don't need, and a clear explanation and quote before any repair work starts. You can also see what to expect when you book vehicle fault finding with us.

When Should You Book Fault Finding?
If you notice any of the following, it's worth booking your vehicle in for fault finding as soon as possible. Not sure what a light on your dashboard means? Take a look at our guide to dashboard warning lights.
Engine management light has come on
Loss of power or car in limp mode
Electrical fault that comes and goes
Battery keeps going flat
Rough idle, misfire or hesitation
Our Fault Finding Tooling & Capabilities
Every fault is different, so we use the right equipment for the job rather than relying on a single scan. Here's some of the kit our technicians use every day to find faults accurately, on all makes and models.

Scan Tools
Dealer-Level Diagnostic Equipment
Our diagnostic equipment works to the same level as the main dealers, reading fault codes and live data from every control unit on your vehicle, not just the engine. It's how we've fixed faults that other garages, and on occasion dealers, couldn't.

Electrical Faults
Oscilloscope & Wiring Tests
Intermittent electrical faults are some of the hardest to pin down. Using an oscilloscope and multimeter, we test sensors, signals and wiring circuits directly to find the exact point of failure, rather than replacing parts in hope.

Leak Detection
Smoke & Leak Testing
Vacuum, boost and evaporative (EVAP) leaks can trigger warning lights, poor running and a loss of power, but they're often invisible to the eye. Our smoke machine fills the system with a harmless vapour so we can see exactly where it's escaping.

Software
Coding & Programming
Many replacement parts need coding to your vehicle before they'll work properly. Our dealer-level tools let us code and program control units and carry out resets and adaptations after a repair, so everything works as the manufacturer intended.

Frequently Asked Questions
Fault Finding & Diagnostics
What's the difference between a code read and fault finding?
A code read simply retrieves the fault codes stored by your vehicle's control units. Fault finding goes further, using live data, wiring tests and specialist equipment to work out what's actually causing the code, so the right repair is carried out first time.
Can you find intermittent faults?
Yes. Faults that come and go can take longer to trace, but with live data, oscilloscope testing and road testing we can often recreate the conditions and pinpoint the cause. It really helps if you can tell us when the fault happens, for example from cold, in wet weather or at certain speeds.
Will you tell me before carrying out any repairs?
Always. Once we've found the cause, we'll explain what's wrong in plain English and give you a quote. We'll never spend more of your money without your approval.
How long does fault finding take?
It depends on the fault. Some can be traced quickly, while intermittent or complex electrical faults can take longer. We'll keep you updated throughout and always check with you before any additional diagnostic time is needed.
Can you diagnose faults on all makes and models?
Yes. Our diagnostic equipment covers all makes and models, and our German Car Specialists site in Sompting brings extra expertise for Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and other German vehicles.
Is it safe to drive with the engine management light on?
If the light is flashing, or the car is losing power or running badly, we'd recommend not driving it any further, as this can cause more expensive damage. If it's on steadily and the car feels normal, it's usually fine to drive carefully to us, but it's best to get it checked as soon as possible. If your car isn't safe to drive, give us a call and we'll talk you through the options, including our collection and delivery service.
