Frequently Asked Questions
MOT FAQs
How early can I get my MOT done?
You can have your MOT up to a month (minus a day) before your certificate runs out and still keep the same renewal date. Booking early gives you time to sort any repairs, and we can send you MOT reminders too.
Can I drive my vehicle if its MOT has run out?
Only to a pre-booked MOT or to a garage for repairs. Otherwise you could be fined up to £1,000 and your insurance may not be valid. If yours has run out, give us a call and we'll book you in as soon as we can.
How long does an MOT take?
Around an hour, as we don't rush it. You're welcome to wait with free Wi-Fi and hot drinks, and we can even order you something to eat. Or drop your vehicle off and we'll call you when it's ready.
What vehicles can you MOT?
We MOT cars, vans, motorhomes, minibuses and larger vans up to 3,500kg. Not sure which MOT your vehicle needs? Give us a call and we'll check for you.
Do you MOT hybrid and electric vehicles?
Yes. We MOT hybrid and electric vehicles at both our Worthing and Sompting garages.
What's checked during an MOT?
An MOT checks your vehicle is safe and legal to drive, including the brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, seatbelts and emissions. It doesn't check the engine, clutch or gearbox, so it isn't a replacement for a regular service.
Can I drive my vehicle if it fails its MOT?
It depends on what the test finds. If it fails with a dangerous fault, it can't be driven until it's repaired. The simplest option is to leave it with us, and we'll repair and retest it before you collect it.
Do you charge for an MOT retest?
If you leave your vehicle with us for the repairs, the retest is free within 10 working days.
Why have you noticed advisories on my MOT that other garages haven't?
We take our time over every MOT, so we can check everything properly. If something is starting to wear, we'd rather let you know now so you can plan for it. An advisory isn't a fail, just something to keep an eye on.
Are my MOT advisories urgent?
Some can wait until your next service, while others are worth looking at sooner. Give us a call and we'll talk you through each one, with no pressure to book anything.
My vehicle failed its MOT elsewhere. Can you do the repairs and the retest?
We can carry out the repairs. The partial retest has to be done where the original MOT was carried out, but we can do a full MOT for you once the repairs are done if you'd prefer.
Do you do pre-MOT checks?
We don't offer separate pre-MOT checks, as some items can only be properly tested with MOT equipment. Booking the full MOT is the best way to know where you stand, and we can sort any work there and then.
Can I have my MOT and service at the same time?
Yes. We can do both in one visit, so you only need to be without your vehicle once. Just let us know when you book.
When does a new car need its first MOT?
Most new cars and vans need their first MOT three years after they were first registered, then once a year after that.
How do I know when my MOT is due?
Your MOT due date is on your last MOT certificate, and you can check it for free on the GOV.UK MOT history checker. Easier still, sign up for our MOT reminders.
Can I drop my vehicle off out of hours?
Yes. Both our Worthing and Sompting garages have an out-of-hours key drop-off, so you can drop your vehicle off the evening before.
