Case Study

Ford Ecoboost Timing Belt Replacement

Our customer brought in their Ford with the 1.0 EcoBoost engine for a preventative timing belt replacement. Ford recommends replacing this 'wet' timing belt every 10 years or 150,000 miles, and main dealers are often quoting between £1,600 and £2,000 for the job. As Ford specialists, we have the full tooling to do it properly, including the VCT setting kit and a torque multiplier to tighten the crank bolt correctly, at a far more competitive price.

Fault Codes

No fault codes – this was a preventative timing belt replacement carried out at the recommended service interval

Common Symptoms
  • Timing belt reaching 10 years or 150,000 miles
  • No record of the belt being changed in the service history
  • Coolant stains around the water pump
  • Engine management or low oil pressure warnings
Ford EcoBoost Inspection

To reach the timing belt cover, we first stripped down the front of the engine and drained both the oil and coolant. While inspecting the water pump, we noticed coolant staining, a sign of an external leak. Rather than take any chances, we ordered a replacement water pump to fit at the same time. Ignoring the recommended replacement interval on a 1.0 EcoBoost can have serious consequences, as a belt that breaks up or snaps while the engine is running can cause significant damage, leading to costly repairs or even a replacement engine.

Ford EcoBoost Timing Belt Replacement

We replaced the timing belt and oil pump belt, along with the water pump and gasket, water housing gasket, front main oil seal, rocker cover gasket, injector clamps and the oil O-ring inside the timing belt cover. These parts should all be replaced as part of the job, as the rubber components go brittle over time and the injector clamps are single-use only. Once reassembled, we fitted a new oil filter and fresh oil, bled the cooling system with new coolant and carried out a full vehicle health check. It's worth knowing that wet belts aren't just found on Ford EcoBoost engines, as models such as the Citroen DS3 and Peugeot 208 use them too.
