Case Study

Porsche Cayenne Boot Not Working

Our customer's Porsche Cayenne had been parked for two months, and since then the boot had stopped opening. The latch mechanism could be heard trying to work before stopping. The customer suspected water might have got in but hadn't found any evidence, although they had noticed feedback coming from the speakers whenever it rained. Our Porsche specialist technicians carried out a full diagnostic investigation.

  • Feedback or droning from the speakers when it rains
  • Fault appearing after the car has been parked for a while
Porsche Cayenne Diagnostics

Our first check showed there was no power reaching the boot latch, pointing to a fault with the rear body module or its wiring. A scan of the rear body module found three permanent fault codes for Terminal 30 circuits 1, 2 and 3 open circuit, which wouldn't clear. The fuses were all intact, so we stripped the offside rear quarter panel and the B and C pillar trims to reach the module. Water getting into the rear of the Cayenne and damaging the body module is a known issue on these vehicles. Pin-point wiring checks and a load test confirmed the wiring was fine, so we removed and opened the module and found heavy corrosion on the circuit board. We tried cleaning and retesting it, but the fault remained. We also checked the amplifier and found heavy corrosion on its terminals and plug, but caught it early enough that cleaning the pins and contacts cured the speaker feedback. A water test then traced the leak to blocked panoramic roof drains, which were overflowing into the car.

Drain Unblocking & Body Module Replacement

We unblocked the panoramic roof drains and retested them to make sure there was no chance of the leak returning. With the source of the water fixed, we replaced the corroded rear body module with a new one. This module needs to be programmed and coded to the vehicle, which requires the right diagnostic equipment and isn't something every garage can do.

Resolution

With the new module fitted, we tested the boot and it opened and closed exactly as it should. A water flow test confirmed the drains were clear with no internal leaks. We dried the area around the new module, reassembled the interior and completed the module coding. Our customer's Cayenne left with a fully working boot, clear panoramic roof drains and a sound system free from droning speakers.
