Case Study
Range Rover Restricted Performance Message
Our customer booked their Range Rover Exclusive in for diagnostics after a 'Restricted Performance' message appeared on the dashboard. This was the vehicle's third visit, as it had been developing a series of new and complex faults, and on its first visit the fuel filter and oil feed pipe had needed replacing. Our Range Rover specialist technicians carried out a thorough diagnostic investigation to track down the cause.

Fault Codes
P0488-72 – Intake throttle position control
P006A – MAP/MAF correlation
Common Symptoms
- 'Restricted Performance' message on the dashboard
- Lack of power
- Black smoke under acceleration
- Fault not always showing when the vehicle is checked
Range Rover Diagnostics
When the Range Rover arrived, there were no warning messages or lights on the dashboard, and damage to a tyre meant we couldn't road test it. We went straight to a fault code scan, which returned P0488-72 and P006A. A visual inspection of the pipework showed no signs of oil leaks. The technical service bulletin advised that P0488 calls for an intake throttle replacement, but to save our customer from paying for unnecessary repairs, we carried out further tests. A smoke test of the intake system revealed a large leak from the nearside intake manifold, which on closer inspection was cracked. The leaking manifold explained code P006A, while a suspected faulty intake throttle unit explained P0488. Both faults were contributing to the symptoms and needed fixing before they caused damage to other components.

Intake Manifold & Throttle Body Replacement
We replaced the cracked intake manifold on the nearside bank, followed by the throttle body. While carrying out the work, we found the vacuum pipe linking the two manifolds had snapped, so we replaced that too. Once everything was refitted, we carried out the necessary relearns and throttle body adaptations.
Resolution
A final road test confirmed the Range Rover was driving well in both steady and harsh driving conditions, with full power restored and no black smoke. The 'Restricted Performance' message had gone, and our customer was back on the road with confidence.
