Case Study
Suzuki Swift Knocking Noise
Our customer booked their Suzuki Swift in for diagnostics to find the cause of a knocking noise from the front of the car. The noise got faster as the car's speed increased, and it would only start after around 15 minutes of driving. Our technicians carried out a thorough investigation to track down every possible cause.

Fault Codes
No fault codes – the knocking noise was a mechanical fault traced through road testing and visual inspection
Common Symptoms
- Knocking noise from the front of the car
- Noise getting faster as speed increases
- Noise only starting after around 15 minutes of driving
- Thumping noise when accelerating away from junctions
Suzuki Swift Diagnostics
We started by accompanying our customer on a road test, but unfortunately the knocking noise didn't appear. We moved on to a visual inspection and found the front brake calipers were rattling in their sliders, which would need the sliders re-greasing along with new brake discs and pads. We also found slight play in the offside front suspension top mount, although with the car unloaded it wasn't enough to cause a noise on its own. The nearside front lower arm rear bush was also starting to bed in, though it hadn't yet exceeded its limits.

Brake, Suspension & Engine Mount Repairs
We replaced the front brake discs and pads, re-greased the front caliper sliders, replaced both front lower arms and fitted a new offside front suspension top mount, followed by a full wheel alignment. On the road test, everything was going well until we pulled away from a junction and heard a thumping noise under acceleration. Back in the workshop, we found the offside upper engine mount was weak and lifting under harsh acceleration, so we replaced it.
Resolution
With the new engine mount fitted, we retested the Suzuki Swift and everything was running as it should, with no more knocking or thumping. Our customer's Swift was back on the road with fresh brakes, refreshed front suspension and a firmly supported engine.
