Case Study
Vauxhall Meriva Thermostat Replacement
Our customer brought their Vauxhall Meriva to our Worthing garage, concerned that the engine was taking too long to warm up and was cooling down while driving, especially on cold days and motorway journeys. Our Vauxhall specialist technicians suspected a thermostat fault, but carried out a full diagnostic investigation to be sure before starting any repairs.

Fault Codes
No fault codes stored – the fault was confirmed through road testing and live temperature sensor data
Common Symptoms
- Engine taking a long time to reach operating temperature
- Engine temperature dropping while driving
- Problem worse on cold days and motorway journeys
- Heater slow to warm up the cabin
Vauxhall Meriva Diagnostics
To find out why the Meriva was struggling to reach and then hold its operating temperature, our technicians first carried out a thorough road test to confirm we could replicate the issue. We then scanned the vehicle's control units for fault codes, but none were present. Checking the live data revealed that both engine temperature sensors were giving matching readings, which should only happen once the thermostat has opened. A visual inspection of the cooling system showed no leaks, and all the coolant hoses were at a uniform temperature, ruling out a blockage. This confirmed the thermostat had stuck in the open position, allowing coolant to flow through the radiator all the time, so a new thermostat housing assembly was required.

Vauxhall Meriva Thermostat Replacement
We replaced the thermostat housing assembly, topped up the coolant to the correct level and bled the system. It's worth knowing that the Vauxhall Corsa, Astra and Zafira of a similar age use the same engine as the Meriva, so they can also be prone to this fault and may need a thermostat replacement if they show the same symptoms.
Resolution
We test drove the Meriva to confirm the engine temperature was building up correctly and no longer dropping while driving. The temperature rose as it should and the engine cooling fan kicked in when required, confirming the thermostat replacement had fully resolved the problem, leaving us with a happy customer.
