Case Study
VW Beetle ABS, Traction Control and TPMS Warning Lights On
Our customer's VW Beetle came in with the ABS, traction control and TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring) warning lights on. They had topped up the tyre pressures and reset the TPMS, which turned all the warning lights off, but the next day all three came back. Our VW specialist technicians carried out a full diagnostic investigation to find the real cause.

Fault Codes
283 – Front left speed sensor G47 – implausible signal
Common Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- Traction control warning light on
- Tyre pressure (TPMS) warning light on
- Lights returning after the TPMS has been reset
VW Beetle Diagnostics
Our diagnostic tests returned fault code 283, showing an implausible signal from the front left wheel speed sensor (G47). On many VW models, the ABS, traction control and tyre pressure monitoring systems all rely on the same wheel speed signals, which is why one faulty sensor can bring on all three warning lights. We carried out a wiring bypass test, which confirmed both the wiring and the ABS module connected to the front left sensor were working correctly. That left either the wheel speed sensor or its pick-up ring as the cause. A visual inspection and check of the pick-up ring showed it was in good condition, confirming the sensor itself had failed.

VW Beetle ABS Sensor Replacement
Once we had confirmed the ABS wheel speed sensor needed replacing and received our customer's authorisation, we ordered a genuine Volkswagen sensor. When it arrived, we fitted the new passenger side front wheel speed sensor and cleared all the stored fault codes.
Resolution
After replacing the front wheel speed sensor and clearing the fault codes, no further codes returned. The ABS, traction control and TPMS warning lights all stayed off, and our customer's VW Beetle was back on the road.
