Case Study

VW Sharan Airbag Light On

Our customer's VW Sharan airbag light came on as they were turning left onto their drive, at the same moment they heard and felt a click. It sounded as though the click had come from the left side of the steering column. As the airbag system is safety-critical, our VW specialist technicians carried out a full diagnostic investigation.

Fault Codes

B10001B – Driver airbag igniter – resistance too high

  • Airbag warning light permanently on
  • Click heard and felt from the steering column when turning
  • Steering wheel buttons not working
  • Horn not working
VW Sharan Diagnostics

The airbag light was on permanently, so we began by scanning for fault codes, which returned B10001B and U108E00. We then monitored the horn and steering wheel button inputs, carried out a visual inspection and checked the technical service bulletins, none of which revealed anything obvious. Further testing showed there was no communication with the steering wheel electronics at all, as nothing on the steering wheel was working or being recognised in the data. The fuses for the steering wheel electronics were all fine. After a series of tests and checks, we confirmed the fault was with the clock spring in the steering column electronics module.

VW Sharan Clock Spring Replacement

To reach the clock spring, we removed the airbag and steering wheel to access the steering column electronics module. We confirmed the power and ground supplies were good, then replaced the module and coded the new one to the vehicle.

Resolution

After fitting and coding the new clock spring module, we retested the vehicle. The airbag warning light had gone out, the steering wheel controls and horn were working again, and our customer left happy with a fault-free Sharan.
