Case Study

VW Transporter in Limp Mode With a Lack of Power

Our customer brought in their VW Transporter in limp mode, with a noticeable lack of power and the engine management light on. Our VW specialist technicians carried out a thorough diagnostic investigation, which uncovered not one but two faults: leaking boost pipes and a collapsed diesel particulate filter (DPF).

Fault Codes

P0200 – Turbocharger under boost
P0299 – Turbo under boost

Common Symptoms
  • Vehicle in limp mode with a lack of power
  • Engine management light on
  • Hissing noise when the engine is under boost
  • Glow plug (coil) light flashing
VW Transporter Diagnostics

We began by scanning for fault codes, which showed P0200 Turbocharger Under Boost. Monitoring the serial data on a road test confirmed the fault was active and revealed low charge pressure. A visual inspection of the intake system found both boost pipes had popped off the intercooler, so we re-secured them. On a second road test the low charge pressure was still present, along with a hissing noise under boost. A smoke test back in the workshop showed both pipes were still leaking and could no longer hold a seal, so they were replaced. With new pipes fitted, the van drove well and the limp mode and engine management light cleared, but the glow plug light then began to flash briefly. A fresh scan showed the fault had returned as P0299 Turbo Under Boost, pointing to a second fault. Further road testing confirmed boost was too low under full load. The N75 turbo control valve and vacuum pipes all tested fine, but exhaust back pressure was too high, causing the turbo to under-perform and likely explaining why the intercooler pipes had blown off in the first place. This pointed to a blocked DPF.

VW Transporter DPF Replacement

We removed the DPF for inspection and found the internal structure had collapsed. At this point no amount of cleaning would repair it, and attempting to would only have given our customer a short-lived, false sense of hope. We fitted a replacement DPF with new fixings and gaskets as required, refitted the sensors and reassembled the vehicle. We then cleared the stored P0299 fault code and reset the DPF pressure sensor data, ready for a final road test.

Resolution

An extended road test confirmed the boost pressure stayed within specification and no further fault codes were triggered. With new boost pipes and a replacement DPF fitted, the VW Transporter was out of limp mode, back to full power and ready to get back on the road.
